The Python Certified Entry-Level Programmer (PCEP) is an internationally recognised certification that validates your Python fundamentals. Complete study guide with exam costs, objectives, study strategies, and resources aligned with Code College's bootcamp curriculum.
The PCEP™ certification from the Python Institute is an entry-level credential that validates your understanding of Python fundamentals. It’s ideal for bootcamp graduates, career-changers, and anyone looking to prove their Python skills to employers.
All Code College Web Programming and Full-Stack bootcamp graduates have the foundation needed to pass PCEP. The exam covers all the topics we teach in our Python module and aligns perfectly with our curriculum.
The PCEP exam is divided into 5 modules, each covering specific Python topics. Below is the breakdown and weight of each section.
Foundational concepts about how computers work, why Python, installation, and writing your first program.
The largest section. Master variables, data types, and operators used in Python.
Conditional logic and iteration patterns used throughout programming.
Working with complex data structures: lists, tuples, and dictionaries.
Function definition, parameters, return values, and scope.
Exception handling and introductory OOP concepts may appear on the exam.
Whether you’re taking the exam once or planning for a retake, here’s what you need to budget.
Practice exams help you identify weak areas and build exam confidence. These are completely optional but highly recommended.

$59 — Just the official exam, after bootcamp practice with our curriculum.
$80–$100 — Exam + retake + one quality mock exam for practice.
$150+ — Exam with retake + multiple mock exams + practice materials.
Take bootcamp-included Python practice and free resources first. Only pay for mock exams if you feel weak in specific areas.
Code daily — minimum 30 minutes of hands-on practice. Use Python interpreter to test code snippets, take weekly mock exams to track progress, and review code output before running.
Time management: You have ~80 seconds per question. Read carefully for keywords. Trace code execution line-by-line for tricky questions. Eliminate obviously wrong answers first. Skip difficult questions and return at the end.
Python indexing starts at 0 (not 1). Use = for assignment; == for comparison. Indentation matters. Colons required after if/for/while/def. List slicing [1:3] excludes the end.
Set daily coding goals. Build a habit of writing and running code. Join Python communities. Celebrate small wins. Take breaks to avoid burnout. Trust your bootcamp preparation on exam day.
Free and paid resources to supplement your bootcamp training and prepare for the exam.
Official Python documentation and tutorial. The authoritative reference for syntax and built-in functions.
Interactive Python course with hands-on exercises. Great for reviewing fundamentals and practicing syntax.
Excellent tutorials and articles on Python concepts. In-depth explanations with code examples.
Official Python Institute study materials and sample questions. This is what PCEP is based on.

PCEP (Python Certified Entry-Level Programmer) is an internationally recognised certification from the Python Institute that validates foundational knowledge of Python and core programming concepts. It’s ideal for bootcamp graduates and career-changers looking to prove their Python skills.
The official PCEP exam costs $59 for a single attempt. A bundle with one retake is $86. The full package with retake and practice test is $95. Third-party mock exams range from $19–$50.
The PCEP exam is 40 minutes long with 30 multiple-choice questions. You need to score 70% (21 correct answers) to pass. On average, that gives you about 80 seconds per question.
PCEP is ideal if you’ve completed Code College’s Web Programming or Full-Stack bootcamp, or have foundational Python knowledge covering variables, data types, control flow, functions, and lists/dictionaries. All our bootcamp graduates have the foundation needed to pass.
Yes. If you don’t pass on the first attempt, you can retake the exam. We recommend the $86 bundle which includes one guaranteed retake. If you fail a second time, you’ll need to purchase another exam attempt.
PCEP certification is valid for 3 years from the date you pass the exam. You can then upgrade to higher-level certifications (PCAP) or recertify if you want to maintain the credential.
PCEP (Entry-Level) is for beginners and bootcamp graduates. PCAP (Associate) is for developers with 1+ year of professional Python experience. PCAP covers more advanced topics like OOP, modules, and file handling.
Yes! All our bootcamp modules cover the PCEP exam topics. Graduates who complete our Python projects and take practice exams typically pass on the first or second attempt. Consistent study and practice are the key to success.
Register with the Python Institute, follow this study guide, and start coding. Code College bootcamp graduates have everything they need to succeed.
