What You Will Learn

Course Curriculum

Microservices Fundamentals & Architecture

Monolith vs microservices, domain-driven design, service granularity, the twelve-factor app methodology.

Spring Cloud Configuration Management

Spring Cloud Config Server, externalized configuration, environment-specific profiles, centralized property management.

Eureka Service Discovery

Service registration, dynamic discovery, client-side load balancing, heartbeats and health checks, self-preservation mode.

Advanced Resilience Patterns

Circuit breakers with Resilience4j, retry logic with exponential backoff, bulkhead isolation, timeouts and rate limiting.

Service Mesh Architecture

Istio service mesh, sidecar proxies, traffic management, automatic mutual TLS, policy enforcement, mesh observability.

Docker Containerization & Orchestration

Dockerfile best practices, multi-stage builds, container registries, Kubernetes deployments, rolling updates, auto-scaling.

Event-Driven Architecture with Kafka

Topics and partitions, consumer groups, Spring Cloud Stream abstraction, event replay, deferred workflow patterns.

Distributed Tracing with Zipkin

Spring Cloud Sleuth, trace IDs and span IDs, baggage propagation, request path visualization, performance debugging.

Security in Distributed Systems

OAuth2 authorization flows, JWT tokens, single sign-on across microservices, role-based access control, mutual TLS.

Monitoring & Observability

Spring Boot Actuator, Prometheus metrics, Grafana dashboards, alerting rules, health checks and dashboards.

API Gateway Patterns

Spring Cloud Gateway, request routing, load balancing, rate limiting, authentication at the gateway level.

Capstone Project: Complete Microservices System

Build, deploy, and monitor a multi-service system integrating all patterns learned. Production-ready architecture.

Prerequisites: Spring Boot proficiency required (Code College Spring Boot course or equivalent commercial experience). Understanding of REST APIs, databases, and Java fundamentals essential.

What to Expect

🎓

Expert-Led Training

All courses are taught by Code College's senior development trainers — practitioners with real-world microservices experience, backed by over 20 years of professional developer training since 2004.

💻

Hands-On Projects

You build distributed systems from day one. Every pattern is reinforced with real exercises and a complete microservices architecture you keep and can deploy.

Before You Start

Prerequisites & Learning Path

This is an advanced course. Ensure you have the right foundation before enrolling.

Required Knowledge

✓ Spring Boot Proficiency

You must be comfortable building REST APIs, working with annotations (@RestController, @Service, @Repository), dependency injection, and Spring Data JPA. If you're rusty, refresh your Spring Boot knowledge before enrolling.

✓ REST API Design

Understanding HTTP verbs (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE), status codes, request/response bodies, and API design principles. Microservices communicate via REST and async events.

✓ Java Fundamentals

OOP concepts (classes, inheritance, interfaces), collections (List, Map, Set), exception handling, and Java 8+ features (lambdas, streams).

✓ Databases & SQL

Basic SQL queries (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE), relational database concepts, and familiarity with PostgreSQL or MySQL. Microservices each own their own database.

Recommended Background

Git & Version Control: Experience with Git, GitHub, or GitLab. You'll push code to repositories during labs.

Command Line: Comfort with terminal/bash commands. Kubernetes and Docker use CLIs extensively.

Linux Basics: Familiarity with Linux concepts (processes, environment variables, file permissions). Not required but helpful for Docker/Kubernetes.

Recommended Learning Path

1

Java Fundamentals (40 hrs)

Start here if you're new to Java. Learn variables, control flow, OOP, and Java 21 features.

2

Spring Boot & Spring Framework (40 hrs)

Build REST APIs, work with Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, and Spring Security. This is the foundation for microservices.

3
