Bootcamps cost real money, take real months of your life, and — unlike a university degree — most South Africans still don't have a clear mental model for how to judge one. Part-time options roughly double the duration at the same total cost, and instalment plans and Income Share Agreements are available for qualifying South African residents — so the full amount usually isn't due upfront. Certification exam fees (Oracle, CompTIA, EC-Council, etc.) are paid separately, directly to the certification body, and aren't part of the bootcamp fee.
For comparison: a South African university Computer Science or IT degree typically runs R400,000–R800,000+ across 3–4 years once you include tuition and years of forgone income. That's the number a bootcamp is actually competing against, not "free."

The Actual Math
Take the most expensive coding track — Java & AI at R99,995, 10–12 months full-time. Against an entry-level developer salary of R300,000–R550,000/year, that's typically recovered inside the first year of employment, and you're earning two to three years before a same-aged university graduate would be. The shorter tracks (R24,995–R57,500) recover even faster. The cybersecurity specialist tracks, from R26,500 over roughly 3 months, follow the same shape — low upfront cost, short time-to-market, against a comparable or higher entry salary band.
That comparison only holds if you actually finish and get hired — which is the part worth being honest about next.
Where the ROI breaks down: a bootcamp is not a purchase that automatically produces a salary. It produces a portfolio, a certification path, and active introductions to employers through Compuways — the hiring decision still depends on interviews and the employer, the same as any job application. Coding vs Cybersecurity — Which Has the Better ROI?
Close to a wash on the numbers. Cybersecurity's specialist tracks are cheaper and faster to complete than the full coding bootcamp, with a comparable or slightly higher entry salary ceiling at the mid-career level. Coding has the longer track record at Code College specifically — the bootcamp has been running since 2013/14, with 500+ graduates and a 4.9/5 rating across 34 reviews. The cybersecurity bootcamp is newer, built on the same Compuways placement infrastructure and employer relationships, but it doesn't yet carry that same multi-year graduate track record — worth knowing going in, even though the curriculum and support model are built the same way.

What "Worth It" Actually Depends On
- Whether you finish. Self-directed learning (YouTube, free platforms) has a very high dropout rate precisely because there's no structure or accountability — a bootcamp's real value is often less about content you couldn't find free elsewhere, and more about the structure that gets you to the end of it.
- Whether you engage with placement support. Compuways' active support is a real advantage over graduating with no industry connections — but it's support, not a guarantee. You still have to show up to interviews and perform in them.
