According to leading international publications, one of the main reasons there is a skills shortage in cybersecurity is that too many juniors are flooding the market who lack coding in their skill set. A Cybersecurity Engineer is expected to have a high level of competency in coding — and without it, even well-intentioned security professionals struggle to adapt to new threats.
The problem: South Africa has a massive cybersecurity skills shortage. The solution isn't more theory — it's coding-first cybersecurity training that produces professionals who can adapt to a rapidly evolving threat landscape.
Why Coding Is the Missing Piece in Cybersecurity
Once-common defence tactics are being rendered obsolete within a few years. Cybersecurity professionals must be able to evolve with the times — which requires the underlying programming skills to understand, analyse, and respond to new attack vectors. Without coding, security professionals are limited to using existing tools. With coding, they can build new ones.
Code College's Approach
To take part in a Code College Cybersecurity Bootcamp, applicants must first prove their competence in coding — either by completing the Java Software Engineering Bootcamp or by passing a special Code College coding assessment.
Once registered, learners study how to protect key business data effectively using best practices. The Cybersecurity module runs for 4 weeks inside the 4IR Bootcamp — which also covers Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. After completion, participants have in-depth knowledge of Applied Information Security practices and are prepared to continue with international qualifications like the prestigious Security+ certification.
Career Paths After Cybersecurity Training
- Cybersecurity Technician
- Cybersecurity Analyst
- Junior Cybersecurity Engineer
Thanks to their grounding as coders, graduates also have the problem-solving skills and technical knowledge to adapt their cybersecurity strategies as the landscape evolves.
First-Hand Experience — Kundani's Story
"Code College impressed me most with its practical approach, success stories, and being deep-rooted in the ICT industry for a long time. They also offered me financial assistance." — Kundani, Code College Graduate
Kundani dropped out of university in 2023 after finding his Maths and Computer Science degree too theoretical. At Code College, he built a portfolio of real applications that became an integral part of his CV — and quickly landed a Junior Full-Stack Web Developer job. Read his full story →
