What You Will Learn in This CompTIA Security+ Training Course

Threats, Attacks & Vulnerabilities

Malware taxonomy (ransomware, RAT, rootkit, keylogger), social engineering techniques, network attacks (MITM, DoS/DDoS, ARP poisoning), application attacks (SQLi, XSS, buffer overflow). Lab: identify attack indicators in Wireshark captures.

Cryptography & PKI

Symmetric (AES, 3DES) and asymmetric (RSA, ECC) encryption, digital signatures, certificate lifecycle and PKI hierarchy, TLS/HTTPS handshake walkthrough, hashing (SHA-256, MD5) and salting. Lab: generate and inspect X.509 certificates.

Identity, Network Hardening & IAM

Authentication factors (MFA, biometrics, tokens), access control models (RBAC, ABAC, MAC, DAC), firewall rule configuration, IDS/IPS deployment, VPN types (site-to-site, remote access). Lab: configure a Linux UFW firewall and review Windows Security Baseline.

Compliance, Vulnerability Scanning & Exam Prep

ISO 27001, NIST CSF, POPIA (SA), GDPR basics. Vulnerability scanning with Nessus: run, interpret and prioritise findings. Security+ SY0-701 full domain review, mock exam practice, and module assessment.

Prerequisites: Module 1 completion or placement assessment pass (R500 fee). Students with CompTIA Network+ can apply for RPL.
Learning Outcomes

After this module you will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the major attack types covered in the CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 exam

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) is listed as a baseline requirement or strong preference in the majority of South African SOC analyst, junior security analyst and IT security officer job advertisements. Many government and financial sector employers treat it as a minimum credential. It is also a prerequisite for more advanced certifications including CEH and CySA+.

The module price covers all training and preparation. The exam voucher is separate — approximately R7,300 from CompTIA directly. The Professional and Elite full bootcamp tiers include the Security+ voucher as part of the package. Individual module students can purchase a voucher through Code College once our CompTIA ATP partnership is in place.

Yes, if you pass a placement assessment (R500 fee) or hold CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) certification. The assessment takes approximately 45 minutes and tests your networking fundamentals. Contact us before enrolling to arrange the assessment.

Security+ (Module 2) is a broad defensive security certification covering policy, compliance, cryptography and general threat awareness — it is the industry baseline. CEH (Module 3) is an offensive-focused certification covering hands-on penetration testing techniques. Most employers want Security+ first; CEH is the natural next step for those moving into red team or pen test roles.

Most candidates with some IT background pass after 60–90 hours of focused study — roughly 6–8 weeks part-time. Complete beginners coming through Module 1 typically need 10–12 weeks for Module 2. The Security+ SY0-701 exam requires 750 out of 900. This module includes full exam-cram sessions, timed practice tests and performance-based question (PBQ) drills to maximise your first-attempt pass rate.

Yes — the module is designed for working professionals. Part-time delivery runs 2–3 evenings per week with all live sessions recorded for catch-up. Most part-time students complete Module 2 in 10–14 weeks. The flexible schedule means you never have to choose between your current job and building your cybersecurity career.
