FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

No prior experience is required for Module 1 — IT & Networking Foundations. It is designed for absolute beginners and covers everything from the OSI model upwards. If you know what a router does, you are ready. You do not need programming knowledge to start.

Module 1 is the entry point for all paths. Module 2 requires Module 1 (or a placement assessment). Modules 3, 4 and 5 require Module 2. Module 6 requires completion of at least Module 4 or 5. If you hold relevant industry certifications (CompTIA Security+, CEH etc.), you may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and skip the corresponding module — a R500 placement test applies.

Each module fully prepares you for the corresponding certification exam. Individual module prices do not include the exam voucher — students purchase their own vouchers directly from CompTIA, EC-Council, or ISC². The Professional and Elite bootcamp tiers include exam vouchers for Security+ and (Elite tier) CySA+ as part of the package. Exam vouchers can also be purchased separately through Code College once CompTIA ATP status is obtained.

Students who complete all six modules within any 24-month period automatically receive the full Code College Cybersecurity Bootcamp Certificate — even if the modules were taken as separate enrolments over time. This allows part-time learners to build the qualification at their own pace without losing credit for prior modules.

Minimum: Any laptop with a web browser and stable, fast internet (10+ Mbps). All labs run in your browser on Code College’s Docker infrastructure. No hardware upgrades needed.

  • Laptop/Desktop: Any brand, any age—Windows, Mac, or Linux. As long as it opens a web browser, it works.
  • RAM: 4 GB minimum (8 GB recommended for smooth multitasking across 2–3 browser tabs)
  • Storage: 256 GB minimum for your OS and course materials
  • Internet: Stable, fast broadband (10+ Mbps recommended). Ethernet preferred for reliability.

All labs (Kali, DVWA, Juice Shop, Security Onion, Splunk, cloud platforms) run on our Docker infrastructure. You access them via your browser or SSH terminal. No local VMs, no external drives, no USB adapters needed. No software to install.

💥 Highly recommended — external monitor (19" or larger, ~R800–R1,500): A second screen makes learning much easier. You can view lab instructions on one display and your lab environment on the other without constantly switching windows. Any secondhand HDMI monitor works perfectly. It improves productivity across all modules.

Yes. All modules are delivered live online via virtual classroom or in-person at Code College's Johannesburg campus in Vorna Valley, Midrand. Both options deliver the same instructor-led experience. Part-time schedules are available for groups.

The 20% alumni discount rewards students who return after finishing a specialist track or the full Cybersecurity Bootcamp Certificate. If you complete a track or the full bootcamp and re-enrol within 36 months for additional modules outside that original enrolment, those modules are discounted 20% off their standalone price, applied automatically at re-enrolment. Modules purchased while you progress through your original track or bootcamp — even if bought one at a time rather than as a bundle — are priced at the standalone or bundle rate you enrolled under, not the alumni rate.

Yes. Many students start with Module 1 — IT & Networking Foundations to see whether cybersecurity is the right fit before committing to a full track or bootcamp. If you enrol in a Specialist Track or the Full Bootcamp within 3 months of completing Module 1, your R9,500 Module 1 fee is credited in full toward the track or bootcamp price. Just tick the relevant box on the application form when you enrol, and our team will verify and confirm your adjusted total.

If you sit Module 1’s ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) or CompTIA Network+ exam and don’t pass, you can redo Module 1’s live classes at no extra charge, as many times as you need, until you pass or feel ready to move on. This is subject to there being a running Module 1 cohort with space for you to join — we don’t guarantee a private repeat session on demand, but Module 1 runs frequently enough that a spot is usually available.

Start with Module 1 — IT & Networking Foundations. It assumes zero prior IT knowledge and covers how networks, operating systems and protocols work from scratch. Students who skip Module 1 and go straight to Module 2 often struggle with the technical foundations. If you already hold CompTIA Network+ or equivalent, you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and begin at Module 2.

Yes — no degree is required. Our modules are designed for career changers, school leavers and professionals from non-IT fields. The certifications you work toward (CompTIA, EC-Council, ISC²) are industry-recognised globally and most South African cybersecurity job ads list certifications — not degrees — as the primary requirement. Your portfolio of hands-on lab work is what employers actually interview you on.

Each module and the full bootcamp align to internationally recognised certifications (CompTIA Security+, ISC² CC, CEH, CySA+) and can be included as a planned skills development expense in your company’s Workplace Skills Plan. Contact us for a formal quotation suitable for WSP submission.
