No. Module 1 is designed for complete beginners. If you can browse the internet and use a computer comfortably, you have enough background. We teach everything else — from what an IP address is to how routers work.
No—all labs run in your browser. You don’t need to buy any hardware. Minimum specs: any laptop with a web browser, 4 GB RAM, 256 GB storage, and stable, fast internet (10+ Mbps recommended).
All labs (Kali, DVWA, Juice Shop, packet capture labs) run on Code College’s Docker infrastructure. You access them via your browser or SSH terminal—no local VMs, no external drives, no USB adapters needed.
💥 Highly recommended — external monitor (19" or larger, ~R800–R1,500): A second screen makes learning much easier. You can view lab instructions on one screen and your lab environment on the other without constantly switching windows. A secondhand HDMI monitor is affordable and improves productivity across all modules.
Module 1 fully prepares you for the ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) exam — which is free to sit for the first attempt — and the CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) exam. Exam fees are separate and paid directly to the certification body.
Module 1 is the mandatory entry point for all three specialist tracks and the full bootcamp. The networking and Linux foundations you build here are used in every subsequent module. It is also the prereq for Module 2 (Security Fundamentals).
Yes — that's exactly what Module 1 is designed for. It's a low-commitment way to find out whether cybersecurity is the right career move before you commit to a full Specialist Track or the Bootcamp. If you decide to continue into a track or the full bootcamp within 3 months of completing Module 1, your R9,500 fee is credited in full toward the track or bootcamp price — just note it on your application form when you enrol.
You can redo Module 1's live classes at no extra charge, as many times as you need, until you pass or feel ready to move on. The only condition is that there needs to be a running Module 1 cohort with space for you to join — we can't guarantee a private repeat session on demand, but with Module 1 running frequently, a spot is usually available.
ISC² launched the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) credential to address the global skills shortage. The exam voucher and self-paced study materials are free of charge through ISC²’s One Million Certified programme — a first-pass exam voucher costs you nothing. Module 1 prepares you for the CC alongside CompTIA Network+, making it an ideal first certification to earn before sitting a paid exam like Security+.
Module 1 is the foundation for all three specialist tracks — Pen Tester, SOC Analyst, and GRC & Cloud. After completing Module 1 you will have a clear picture of which path suits your interests. Entry-level cybersecurity roles in South Africa include SOC analyst, junior pen tester, IT security analyst and network security administrator — all of which build on the foundations covered here.
